York County Republicans Approve Measure to Reduce the Size of the Legislature
HARRISBURG – Members of the York County Republican delegation to the House of Representatives recently joined their colleagues in approving a measure to give voters the option to reduce the size of the Legislature.

Under House Bill 153, voters would be given the option to downsize the House from 203 to 151 members. The bill was amended in the House to extend that decision to the size of the state Senate. As amended, voters would decide if the Senate should be reduced from 50 members to 38.

York County House Republican Reps. Seth Grove (R-Dover), Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York Township), Kate Klunk (R-Hanover), Keith Gillespie (R-Hellam) and House Appropriations Chairman Stan Saylor (R-Red Lion) issued the following statement:

“With a population of approximately 12.8 million people, each state representative currently represents about 62,000 constituents. If the House is reduced to 151 members, each representative would serve a constituency of approximately 84,000.

“We fully support allowing the people to decide the size of their representative government and put up our votes to give the people the ability to make this important decision.

“Since the bill was amended in the House, the Senate would have to further amend the bill to remove downsizing of the Senate and the House would have to approve the amended version in order for voters to see the referendum on the ballot in November. We hope the Senate takes this action so the voters can exercise their voice on this matter this fall.”
