HARRISBURG – Grant funding was awarded to Hanover Borough under the Consumptive Use Mitigation Projects grant program, according to Rep. Kate Klunk (R-Hanover).

The borough may use the $500,840 grant to repair its damaged dam intake tower, therefore helping to protect public health and safety, avoid water use conflicts, prevent water quality impacts, support economic production and sustain ecological flows.

“These dollars for Hanover Borough will go a long way toward improving the water dam,” said Klunk. “This will allow the borough to quickly respond, improving public safety while enabling our municipal officials to better control water outflow during draught periods. I was pleased to advocate for this award, which will also keep rates low for Hanover’s water consumers.”

Consumptive use refers to water that is used but not returned to rivers and streams because it is evaporated, transpired, incorporated into products or otherwise lost. The grants are funded by fees paid to the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) through regulated projects as mitigation for their consumptive water use.

The Susquehanna River Basin Commission is a federal/interstate governmental agency responsible for protecting and managing the water resources within the 27,500 square-mile Susquehanna River Basin.
