York County Fire Companies Receive Nearly $800,000 in Funding, Local Lawmakers Say

June 1, 2020

HARRISBURG– Fire and EMS companies in York County received nearly $800,000 through the Fire Company Grant and Emergency Medical Service Grant programs during fiscal year 2019-20, the county’s House Republican delegation announced.

In response, the delegation, which consists of Reps. Seth Grove (R-Dover), Dawn Keefer (R-Dillsburg), Kate Klunk (R-Hanover), Keith Gillespie (R-Hellam), Mike Jones (R-York Township) and House Appropriations Chairman Stan Saylor (R-Red Lion), issued the following statement:

“The $788,177 in funding will be especially handy as fire and EMS companies reel from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused many of the companies to sideline fundraising efforts.

“So many of the companies in our communities are volunteer driven and rely on first responders who are our neighbors, family members and friends to save countless lives each year. We are eternally grateful for all they do.

“The grants, which were awarded through the 2019-20 Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service Grant Program, may be used for construction or renovation of a unit’s station, the purchase or repair of equipment, training or debt reduction. The program is funded solely from state gaming proceeds.”

Local first responders can apply for additional funding after the House approved legislation to allocate $50 million in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act dollars. The grant funding will be used to help fire and EMS companies with added costs they have encountered due to COVID-19, as well as the loss of fundraising opportunities due to the stay-at-home orders and other mitigation efforts. The funds would be distributed in the same manner as the annual Fire Company Grant Program and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program, respectively.
