Hanover Receives Grant to Improve Facades, Klunk Says

Life in Balance Yoga also got $5,000 and turned it into a total of $11,942 in repairs with a new front door, windows for the store front, painting the shutters and gingerbread molding, new business signs and repairs to the existing facade.

HANOVER – Rep. Kate Klunk (R-Hanover) today announced that Main Street Hanover is the recipient of a $50,000 Keystone Communities program grant to improve facades in the borough.

“So much has been happening to improve Hanover these past few years and this grant funding builds upon all the work that’s occurred and is underway. The future is certainly bright for downtown,” Klunk said. “This grant is a clear indication that people in Harrisburg have noticed this hard work and are willing to support the important economic development and revitalization that’s taking place.”

During the last funding round, Klunk said a $40,000 grant award leveraged $106,000 in façade improvements. Two such projects included Little’s Coins and Jewelry and Life in Balance Yoga (photos attached to press release).

“When you talk about getting the most for your money, Little’s Coins and Jewelry got a $5,000 grant that produced $11,846 in improvements – replacing windows, installing new lighting and repairing the marble base of building,” Klunk said. “Life in Balance Yoga also got $5,000 and turned it into a total of $11,942 in repairs with a new front door, windows for the store front, painting the shutters and gingerbread molding, new business signs and repairs to the existing facade. These seemingly small investments have really transformed Hanover’s streetscape.”

The latest grant funding, which comes from $6.5 million available for competitive grant awards, will be used to improve about 10 building facades in Hanover. Applications by property owners to receive portions of the grant funding will be reviewed and funds will be awarded later this year.

“The community benefits by having a downtown with improved facades. These improvements bring about additional private investment, new businesses and a more visually appealing downtown community core,” said Justine Trucksess, manager of Main Street Hanover. “The community impact of this program is a visual sign of the changes taking place in our downtown. It helps to build momentum for the movement. We are thrilled to open up another round of grants with this grant award.”

The Keystone Communities grant program is administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development. Funding is used to support local initiatives to grow and stabilize neighborhoods and communities, boost the formation of partnerships between public and private sector entities, and improve the quality of life for residents.
