Farmland Preservation Bill Approved by House, Klunk Says
HANOVER – Legislation by Rep. Kate Klunk (R-Hanover) to give farmers who decide to preserve their land more freedom over their property received unanimous support by the House as it passed the bill on Monday.
“I’m glad my
House Bill 370 to give farmers more options when it comes to preserving their land for generations to come is on its way to the Senate for consideration,” Klunk said. “Agriculture remains a top industry in Pennsylvania, and especially in the 169th District where farms are plentiful. Preserving our precious farmland is a key ingredient to ensuring our rich farming tradition remains for generations to come.”
Under current law, farmers can subdivide a section of land from the property to construct a home. However, they are not permitted to subdivide a portion of the property on which a home already exists. Klunk’s legislation would reverse that provision, allowing farmers to subdivide already-constructed homes from the property without penalty.
The proposed changes to how farmlands are preserved, as laid out in this bill, would give farmers more options when it comes to how their land is used.
This important bill to give farmers more say over their own property now goes to the Senate for consideration.
